'Accounting Makes Cents!' is a tribute to perseverance and hard work − two qualities that embody Malcolm − and is a proud achievement for someone who has dedicated his life to teaching Accounting.
Born in East London in 1947, the second of three brothers, Malcolm first studied Accounting (then 'Bookkeeping') in Std. 7 (Grade 9) in 1961, at Cambridge High School in East London, and matriculated from Glenwood High School in Durban in 1964. He qualified as a teacher of Accounting and Mathematics in 1968, at the Durban Teachers' Training College.
In 1969, he started his career at Estcourt High School, teaching Accounting to Matric for 9 years, during which time he also continued his own education and completed a B.Com degree in 1979 at the University of Natal in Pietermaritzburg, majoring in Accounting.
In 1980, he accepted the post as Head of Department in charge of Accounting at Northland Boys' High School (now Northwood), where he taught for 9 years. He also served 2 years as Head of Department at Mansfield High School.
For 10 years he served as sub-examiner for Accounting in the Matric examination in the Natal Education Department.
In 1991, Malcolm's lecturing career began when he took up the post of lecturer in Accounting to first year students in the School of Accounting at the University of Natal in Durban (now University of KwaZulu-Natal), a position he has made his own for 20 years.
Literally thousands of students have benefitted from his straightforward approach to teaching Accounting, many of whom have taken his expertise to other countries abroad.

"Teachers open the door − you enter by yourself."
I would argue that some teachers open the doors wider than others do, helping to make learning a positive experience by keeping things simple, logical and even fun!
Malcolm is exactly this type of teacher and over 42 years of teaching basic financial accounting, at both high school and university level, he has established himself as one of the most popular and respected educators in his field in South Africa today.
I trust you will find 'Accounting Makes Cents!' just that kind of 'door-opening' experience.
